Overseas Members
Membership of the Society is open to all people around the world who
support our aims and objectives. In almost every respect, Members who
live outside the UK enjoy the same benefits and privileges as those who
live inside the UK. There are however one or two areas of difference.
This page explains what those differences are.
Eligibility for Membership
Membership is open to nationals of every country, regardless of where
they are resident.
Qualifications
You do not need to hold a UK qualification in order to become a member.
We regularly assess applications for membership on the basis of university
degrees and diplomas from all around the world. We do this by applying
established rules and procedures to determine how your qualifications
most closely compare with those in the UK. We do however require you to
provide an appropriate English translation if your diplomas are in another
language.
Membership Fees
Fees are the same for all members around the world. All members may pay
in sterling, US dollars or Euro, whichever is more convenient. Overseas
members who have a UK bank account may pay by direct
debit. We recognise that sending foreign currency out of some countries
can be complicated and expensive. For this reason we allow members who
wish to do so to pay a lump sum in advance (e.g. £300) every few
years rather than paying an annual subscription every year.
Membership Benefits
All benefits of membership provided directly by The Society apply internationally.
These are: access to the Journal, the newsbrief, and all sections of the
website. In addition, most of our professional services (CV clinic, online
appointments, recruitment and commissions) are available both inside and
outside the UK.
However benefits which are not provided directly by The Society but by
another organisation are, in many cases, available only to UK members.
This is not by our choice but because of the way some of these providers
are set up. The benefits currently available to UK members only are:
- receipt of the weekly Public Health News magazine
- access to Professional Indemnity Insurance
- membership of the Royal Overseas League
- membership of the Thomas Cook Holiday Club
Governance
Under our Articles of Association, only Fellows resident in the
UK are eligible for election to Council. Likewise only voting Members
(i.e. Fellows and Members) resident in the UK may vote in Council elections.
The countries with the largest groups of Society members outside the
UK are:
Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China (mostly Hong Kong SAR), India,
Ireland, Malta, and The USA
We also have members in:
Argentina, Bahrain, Bermuda, Botswana, Brunei Darussalam, the Caribbean
countries, Chile, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Germany, Ghana, Gibraltar, Greece,
Guyana, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Kuwait, Lebanon, Luxemburg, Malawi,
Malaysia, Mauritius, Nigeria, New Zealand, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, South
Africa, Saudi Arabia, The Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Singapore, Spain,
Switzerland, Tanzania, Thailand, and the UAE
We look forward to welcoming you as a member as well. To apply please
