The National Minimum Care Standards came into force on 1 April 2002. They say that say that the food your home serves must be 'wholesome appealing and balanced'. This conference will help care managers, catering managers, nursing care managers, nutritionists and dieticians understand what the new standards require.

The Royal Society for the Promotion of Health is focusing its work for the current year on ensuring that managers responsible for care and for catering in care homes are as well prepared as possible to comply with the new regulations.

Eating food which is wholesome, appealing and balanced is an essential element of quality care. The Society is contributing to the debate around how best to provide food which meets the new standards by:

holding a national conference in London on 8 May

publishing a free collection of recipes from Loyd Grossman

publishing a review of scientific literature on feeding older people

commenting and contributing to the debate in the sector the press

working with other organisations to disseminate best practice and current research

offering examinations in food hygiene and nutrition relevant to the sector's needs

publishing relevant articles in our quarterly Journal
