Royal Society of Health applauds smokefree vote
The Royal Society of Health is delighted that yesterday (February 14) MPs voted for a comprehensive smoking ban in all enclosed public places and workplaces, including pubs, restaurants and private members' clubs. In a recent letter to all MPs, the Society with the Coalition for Public Health Action had urged MPs to see the public health sense of a comprehensive ban. The legislation will bring England into line with smokefree commitments already made in other parts of the UK. Professor Richard Parish, Chief Executive of the Society said: "Comprehensive smokefree legislation will have a profound influence on public health in England for many years to come. Not only will the lives of hundreds of hospitality workers be saved, this kind of legislation, as has been shown around the world, will lead to many smokers quitting. This is surely one of the most important advance in public health in England for many decades." Ends For more information please contact Notes for Editors
