Annual General Meeting and Awards Ceremony

| An unprecedented
line-up of guest speakers made this year's RSH Annual General Meeting
and awards ceremony a significant occasion for the whole public health
community. |
| The 131st Annual General Meeting,
which took place at London's Selfridge's Hotel in July, saw the investiture
of Dr Selwyn Hodge FRSH as the new Society Chair, and Mr Paul Madgwick
as Society President. |

Following a year of notable success for The Society,
outgoing President Mr Andrew Banfield OBE was invested as Vice
President Emeritus and asked in that capacity to continue to be
an active part of the organization.

Chair of the Parliamentary Select Committee, and MP
for Rother Valley, Kevin Barron, was invested as Honorary Vice
President of The Society.
The 2007 Queen Elizabeth II Gold Medal was this year awarded
to the internationally renowned Professor Miriam Were, Chair of
the Kenyan National AIDS Council.
Professor Ian Banks of the Men's
Health Forum was the 2007 recipient of The RSH Gold Medal.

Upon receiving Honorary Fellowship of The Society
Dr Fiona Adshead said: 'To be honoured by my profession really means
so much.'

Honorary Fellowships were this year awarded
to: Professor Sir David King, who earlier in the year delivered
the RSH Annual Lecture at the Faculty of Public Health's annual
conference (click here
to see the lecture); Director General for Health Improvement, Dr
Fiona Adshead; Chair of the RIPH and President of the Faculty of
Public Health Dr Alan Maryon Davis; and to out-going Society Chair
Paul Madgwick.
The RSH Young People's Achievement Award 2007 went to London
Youth Rowing, who enable young people of all abilities and backgrounds
to engage in the sport.

The inaugural Chair's Award was presented by outgoing Chair
Paul Madgwick to the tutor he credited with inspriing him in a subject
often 'seen as very dry', Mr Gren Presland.
Outgoing President Andrew Banfield presented the first President's
Award to Ian Gray of the CIEH
for his work in support of the ban on smoking in workplaces in England.
Another award established for 2007 is the position of Honorary
Academician, created to encourage closer links between The Society
and academia. The first recipients of this honour were Staffordshire
University professors Christine King and Paul Kingston, Brunel
University professors Pascale Allotey FRSH and Daniel Reidpath
FRSH, and Professor Maurice Mittelmark of the University
of Bergen.

Chief Medical Officer for England Professor
Sir Liam Donaldson presented the Paddy Donaldson Awards for
the second year running. Recipients were: Lana Khoury, Brunel University;
Nicola Hill, South Bank University; Matthew Cairns, London School
of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine; and Erika Goldson, London School
of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. A special Certificate of Commendation
was awarded to Trudy Hedges, Brunel University. |

Society Honorary Vice President, the Right Honourable Kevin Barron
MP, presented this year's RSPH
Qualifications prizes. Winners were as follows: Rebecca
Loader, Intermediate Certificate in Food Safety; Michael Daniels,
Advanced Certificate in Food Safety; Kevin Wilson, Advanced Diploma
in Health and Safety in the Workplace; Robert Chappell, Certificate
in Asbestos Inspection Procedures; Colin Slaney, Intermediate Certificate
in Pest Control; Catherine Woodcock, Intermediate Certificate in
Nutrition.
