Society's 131st Annual General Meeting and Awards Ceremony
An unprecedented line-up of guest speakers made this year's RSH Annual General Meeting and awards ceremony a significant occasion for the whole public health community.
The 131st Annual General Meeting, which took place at London's Selfridge's Hotel in July, saw the investiture of Dr Selwyn Hodge FRSH as the new Society Chair, and Mr Paul Madgwick as Society President.

New Society Chair Dr Selwyn Hodge holds the 1966 RSH membership brochure that inspired him to join.

Following a year of notable success for The Society, outgoing President Mr Andrew Banfield OBE was invested as Vice President Emeritus and asked in that capacity to continue to be an active part of the organization.

Upon accepting the position of Chair, Dr Hodge spoke of his objectives for the next year. Click here to read his speech in full.

Chair of the Parliamentary Select Committee, and MP for Rother Valley, Kevin Barron, was invested as Honorary Vice President of The Society.

The 2007 Queen Elizabeth II Gold Medal was this year awarded to the internationally renowned Professor Miriam Were, Chair of the Kenyan National AIDS Council.

Professor Ian Banks of the Men's Health Forum was the 2007 recipient of The RSH Gold Medal.

The RSH Young People's Achievement Award 2007 went to London Youth Rowing, who enable young people of all abilities and backgrounds to engage in the sport.

The inaugural Chair's Award was presented by outgoing Chair Paul Madgwick to the tutor he credited with inspriing him in a subject often 'seen as very dry', Mr Gren Presland.

Outgoing President Andrew Banfield presented the first President's Award to Ian Gray of the CIEH for his work in support of the ban on smoking in workplaces in England.

Another award established for 2007 is the position of Honorary Academician, created to encourage closer links between The Society and academia. The first recipients of this honour were Staffordshire University professors Christine King and Paul Kingston, Brunel University professors Pascale Allotey FRSH and Daniel Reidpath FRSH, and Professor Maurice Mittelmark of the University of Bergen.
