OBESE PATIENTS 'LACK
motivation'
A survey of
primary care nurses in the north of England has revealed that 45%
believe that obese patients lack the motivation to change. Four
per cent of those surveyed even admitted to feeling disgusted by the
obese. The survey found that only one in seven doctors’
surgeries in the region provide well-developed support programmes for
obese patients, and 89% of respondents recognised the need for more
effective primary care services to tackle the issue. For more
details, see the website of the
Journal
of Advanced Nursing. (DOI:10.1111/j.1365-2648.2007.04297.x.)

Increased Risk of Suicide in Hot Weather
There is an increased risk of suicide during hot weather, a new study
has discovered. Seasonal fluctuation in suicide has been observed in
many populations. High temperature may contribute to this, but the
effect of short-term temperature changes has not been studied.
This study set out to assess the relationship between daily
temperature and daily suicide counts in England and Wales between
January 1993 and December 2003. It also explored whether heat
waves are linked to increased mortality from suicide. During the
period of the study, above 18 degrees Celsius each degree increase in
average temperature was found to be associated with a 3.8% rise in all
suicides and a 5.0% rise in violent suicide. See the
British Journal of Psychiatry
website where the abstract of this study (Relationship between daily
suicide counts and temperature in England and Wales) can accessed for
free.

11% rise in work-related
fatalities
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) statistics published in late July
show an 11% rise in work-related fatalities in the last year.
This represents 241 workplace deaths in the period 2006-7. The
statistic is revealed in the report
Statistics of fatal injuries. The
HSE say that although a long-term downward trend is still evident, the
rate of decrease has slowed over the last 15 years and there has been
very little change in the overall rate over the last five years. Trade
union
Prospect says the statistics confirm that HSE’s reaction to its
shrinking budget and reduced workforce has been to cut the amount of
investigation and enforcement.
